When we meet someone, the first thing we do is look at their face. The same applies when we look at images of people. We often look for clues to mood and character which will help us identify the thoughts, feelings and experiences of those portrayed, hoping for further explanation of their situation. These are just some of the elements which make portrait painting such a popular theme.
The opening of Central’s Portraiture Exhibition last Wednesday, which was attended by prize nominees and their guests, had extra cause for celebration. Not only did it display an exciting range of styles and mediums from girls, it also heralded the opening of Central’s very own gallery.
Made from a less well used studio in Russell House, the gallery is a beautiful exhibition space, creating a haven of tranquillity at the heart of a busy centre for artistic endeavour. Beryl Rankin, Central High’s former Head of Art proved to be the perfect choice to open the gallery officially, judge and announce the nominations and prizes.
The hang which is roughly chronological begins with entries from Year 6 and 7. Naive in their execution these works have a lovely primitive feel. Moving through to the more developed work of the Sixth Form, Lauren, displayed work which demonstrated both technical skill and, in her final piece a melancholy presence which was at once both haunting and beautiful. Amanda, the overall winner created a piece which was a small perfect painting showing an expressive use of colour in the face and beautifully executed. |
