GCSE success at Blackheath High

Year 11 students at Blackheath High School were celebrating this morning after achieving exceptional GCSE results. With a 100% pass rate, 99% grade A* – C and 68% grade A* or A, there was much to celebrate, but many said they had to work extremely hard to achieve their results.

“We are delighted with these exceptional results,” said Headteacher, Lisa Laws. “GCSE exams are not getting easier; they are different to those of 30 years ago, but they are still just as challenging. In some subjects, the amount of knowledge that candidates are expected to have has been reduced but the importance attached to understanding and the ability to apply knowledge have increased. In addition, candidates now tend to sit more subjects, at least 10 rather than 8 as they did in the 1960s and 70s; overall, the exams are still very demanding. We are very proud of our year 11 girls who have worked very hard and deserve this tremendous success.”

“I found the exams a real challenge,” said Lois Edmett, who achieved 13 GCSE’s: 12 A*s and 1 A. “I had to work extremely hard, revise intensively and take my mocks while I was filming scenes for Poirot! It’s not enough to simply be knowledgeable in a wide range of topics; you also have to learn how to apply that knowledge. I am so pleased with my results, but I worked very hard to achieve them.”
