International School award

Heathfield is the first secondary school in Harrow to receive the British Council’s prestigious International School Award.  This is in recognition of the work which goes on throughout the school from Juniors through to Sixth Form on preparing their girls for life as global citizens.

To gain the award, a detailed portfolio containing photographs and evaluations from students and staff was prepared as evidence of the international dimension of teaching in subjects. Themes included the teaching of Mandarin, home-stay visits abroad, specially-themed international days, cultural visits, celebration of Chinese New Year and how Heathfield aims to include the international dimension to the curriculum and the community.

Michelle Heryet, International School Co-ordinator, attended the awards ceremony earlier this month, held at The Brewery Conference Centre, London to collect the award on behalf of Heathfield School. The presentation was made by George Alagiah, BBC TV journalist and news broadcaster. Mr Alagiah has won numerous awards including Best International Report, Amnesty International’s Best TV Journalist and was part of the BBC team which collected a BAFTA for its coverage of the Kosovo conflict, in 2000.

Michelle Heryet, said “We are thrilled to receive the award which provides recognition of all the activities which go on in the day to day life of the school.  It is a very special indication of just one of the reasons why Heathfield is such a unique school.  The award ceremony, and George Alagiah’s key note speech, in particular, was inspirational and served as a poignant reminder of why the promotion of internationalism in schools is so important.”
