Finalists rise to the occasion at the 2016 GDST Bake Off final
Imagination and creativity were on display on 10 November, when eight talented bakers from five GDST schools took part in the final of the GDST Bake Off 2016, hosted by Sheffield High School.
The finalists were selected from the 23 entrants from 16 schools following two semi-finals, at Nottingham Girls’ High School and Portsmouth High School, in October.
Aged from 11 to 18, the girls were challenged to bake cupcakes in honour of a favourite heroine, real or fictional, in three hours. Inspirational women included JK Rowling, Marie Curie, Fraulein Maria (from the Sound of Music), Katniss Everdeen (from the Hunger Games books and films) and food writer, presenter and GDST alumna Mary Berry.
The judges, Howard Middleton, a former Bake Off finalist, and Tiina Carr, who runs a boutique hotel and restaurant, Brocco on the Park in Sheffield, found it very hard to choose between the delicious and imaginatively-presented creations.
The runner up was India Beighton from Oxford High School, whose cupcakes honoured the US civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
The winner was Clara Holmes from the Royal High School Bath, whose mountain-like meringue-topped ginger and lime cupcakes were inspired by Juno Tabei, the Japanese mountaineer who was the first woman to conquer Mount Everest.
Well done to all the girls involved on their brilliant (and delicious) efforts.
