T.A.L.E.S. of Success!

A number of current Year 8 pupils successfully entered a Young Writers short story competition called T. A. L. E.S. at the end of their Year 7.
The collection has just been published and all the girls also received winners’ certificates. Those whose stories were published include: Gabrielle, Zena, Doyon, Grace, Madeleine, Hannah, Harriet, Sidi, Simone and Ruolin. The book’s full title is T.A.L.E.S. from Home and Away, edited by Lynsey Hawkins.

Rotary Club Public Speaking
On Thursday, 26th January our Year 8 Public Speaking team, consisting of Emily, Katie and Sidi won the local (Llanishen) Rotary Club event, beating 7 other teams, all older than them!
With their subject ‘Chocolate – a blessing or a bane’ – they entertained the audience in great style. Not only did they win the prize for being the best team but Emily won the accolade of ‘Best Speaker’ in the competition.
One of our sixth form teams (Eleanor , Daisy and Ayesha ) came second and both teams will now go on to represent the school in the regional round, which will be held in Tongwynlais church hall on Wednesday 15th February. All support would be very welcome.

company members at the Young Entreprise Trade Fair
In September 2005 students in years 10 and 12 formed seven Young Enterprise companies.

Five companies are in year 10 and two are in year 12. Of the companies in year 10, Sprinkles organised a very good netball match in the Autumn term which took place between staff and pupils. The staff were victorious! Vintage held an event in which several teachers exhibited their singing talents. The other three year 10 companies decided to take part in the Young Enterprise competition. The first major event, the Trade Fair, was held at City Hall on Friday 9th December. This was the most intensely fought competition with 36 companies from South East Wales taking part. All three year 10 companies made good profits. Tribal Dolls (Zoe, Laura, Chandni, Sioned and Asjad) sold their jewellery and painted henna designs on the lady visitors, Lunar Eclipse (Emily, Rebecca, Megan, Kitty and Sorcha) sold out of their recipe book and took a large number of future orders, and Stage Presents (Hannah, Tammy Rae, Georgia, Bethan and Freya) sold a variety of seasonal goods.

Both Tribal Dolls and Lunar Eclipse have entered the competition for the best business plan and the winner will be announced this month (January). The award for the best company at the trade fair was won by Vibe of year 12 who are organising a fashion show which will take place at the Coal Exchange on the 11th March.

Curriculum Evening- Thursday 16th February 7pm

Each year we hold a curriculum evening for parents, focussing on a specific curriculum area or areas. The main purpose of the evening is to give you an overview of what is taught in that subject and to give you practical examples of the different types of learning activities that your daughter takes part in. It is also an opportunity to ask the staff any questions and to find out how you can support your daughter’s learning at home.
These evenings have always been very successful in the past and I do hope that you will be able to join us. The focus this year will be on foundation subjects such as music, geography and ICT.
