Young
Enterprise -
Jive: Fashion Show
Jive, one of this year's Young Enterprise Companies
organised a Fashion Show at the Coal Exchange in Butetown
in Cardiff.

Rehearsing
at the Coal Exchange
|
The
Fashion show which was a great success, gave the year
12 students the opportunity to gain hands on experience
of promoting and running a business. They worked well
in a team to set up and arrange the logistics and
the format of the evening and spent lots of time in
rehearsals to ensure the event was an enjoyable evening
for both the guests and the company team. They arranged
sound and lighting engineers and a dvd to be produced
of the event. On the experience the team said "we
had our ups and downs, as every business does, but
we think that our biggest success was that we overcame
so many difficulties to not only have a successful
and profitable show but also forming priceless friendships
along the way".
Well done to all involved! |
Swimming Pool
Refurbishment
The swimming
pool was closed during Autumn half term principally
to upgrade the mechanical and chemical plant.

The improved
swimming pool
|
A new housing was constructed for the chemical plant
incorporating an automatic dosing system and control
panel. In
the main Plant Room, the filter media was replaced
along with new recirculation pumps and associated
pipework.
At
the same time, the opportunity was taken to carry
out refurbishment work within the pool area.
The
tiles in the swimming pool were re-grouted and the
walls to both the shallow and deep ends and adjacent
to the changing cubicles were lined with Whiterock
wall cladding. This gives the pool a much smarter
appearance and will eliminate the need for periodic
painting and decorating to these areas. The old
changing cubicles have also been replaced with the
new doors and frames being manufactured using bright
primary colours.

Firemen
Visit by Year 5
Four firemen came to school
today to talk to us about fire safety. They showed
us a video which demonstrated how fast a fire can
spread in a home. Within four minutes, the whole
room had caught fire.
Lessons at the Fire
Engine
|
|
We
learnt about planning an escape plan for our
own homes and fire officer Nick showed us
a smoke alarm. It had a high-pitch alarm which
made everyone jump!
The
best bit was having a look at the fire engine.
Rhian was especially impressed by sitting
in the bosses’ seat! Everyone got to
talk to the fire officers and have a thorough
look at the fire engine which included lots
of tools, clothing and hose-pipes!

have done extremely well, winning 4 rounds to reach the
final stage.
They beat 4 other teams in this round
of the competition (all English) who were from
Year 9, and although they were the youngest competitors
there they impressed the audience with their topic ‘Chocolate
should be part of a balanced diet’.
They will now compete in Manchester on 7th May, waving

| On
the Right Track

Rebecca, Katie, Hannah, Diwa, Rachel and Rose (pictured
above) have completed a 6 week ‘On-road Cycle
Training Course’ run by the Cardiff Road Safety
Centre.
The training introduces
them to safe cycling on roads incorporating pre-riding
safety checks, safe riding and balance, right and left
turns at junctions, signalling, passing junctions and
overtaking parked obstructions. At the end of the course
they revise all that they have been taught and are given
a final assessment.
The aim of this course
is to enable the girls to cycle safely and to encourage
them to cycle to school where practical. |

| Wednesday
1st March was a day of music, dance, poetry, performance and competition
as all the girls in the Junior School joined together to mark
the occasion of St. David’s Day. The day took the form of
an Eisteddfod, a celebration of both our cultural heritage and
our girls’ many and varied talents. The girls had opportunity
to work both independently and collaboratively, developing camaraderie,
team spirit and pride.
It was a joy to see every girl taking her
part in this special day, developing confidence and self-esteem,
discovering capabilities, and above all sharing in the enthusiasm
and excitement of a very enjoyable experience.

School Eisteddfod Celebrations
|
| The
School Eisteddfod was held again this year as part of the school’s
St. David’s Day celebrations.
Years 7, 8 and 9 participated in stage competitions in the morning
and there were some outstanding performances from the students.
The afternoon session began with the House Drama– the houses
performed their own interesting interpretations of The Wizard
of Oz and Trotter won for their complete and tightly directed
performance. The winning bard this year was Claire from Year 13
with her poem about “ Welsh Heroes.” The highlight
of the afternoon came with the long awaited House Choir competition
and the various renditions of “ We are the Young .”
Trotter and Baldwin were awarded joint first position for the
competition but the Eisteddfod’s winning house this year
was Lewis. Congratulations to all the students who took part
and many thanks for making it a memorable event.
