Music - working with the best!

Karl Jenkins - the composer works with Howell's School Choir
Karl Jenkins and Mrs Phillips rehearse for Christmas Presence

Karl Jenkins and Mrs Phillips with Choir rehearsing for Christmas Presence in the Octagon rehearsal room whilst being televised for the news by HTV.

All the hard work was rewarded for the Howell’s School Senior Choir when they joined the conductor Owain Arwel Hughes, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ardwyn Singers for a celebration of Christmas Music at the brand new Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in early December.
It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to perform in this new magnificent venue and the choir were delighted to include in their programme a new commissioned work composed by the renowned Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

            Gymnastics Championships

Very well done to the girls from the Junior School, who won the Junior Under 10 Welsh Gymnastics Championships held on Friday 26th November 2004.

Many congratulations to the cast and technical crew of Daisy Pulls it Off for an evening of absolutely spiffing entertainment. Their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the rehearsals paid off as they performed splendidly to a full house on each evening. A special mention must be given to Lucy James whose talent and stamina were inspiring. We now look forward to next term’s House drama in the Eisteddfod and an evening entertainment provided by our very talented Sixth form.

Lesotho Links

Lesotho Visitors

This year Howell’s has formed a link with Likhakeng High School in Lesotho. Organised by the charity Dolen Cymru established in 1985, Miss Brewer (Head of French) visited Lithakeng in February. The school hosted a visit to Wales for Mr Patrick Mojarane the Deputy Principal; so far we have collected books and stationery and this academic year are raising funds to equip a new science lab for the school.

ESU - Area Round Winners

The area round of the ESU Public Speaking Competition took place on at Rougemont School, Newport. Howell’s was represented by Eleanor (chair), Lara (speaker) and Varsha (voter of thanks); Lara spoke on the subject of global warming. Such was the conviction of Lara’s speech and with the excellent support of her team mates, Eleanor and Varsha, we were declared the winners, beating stiff competition from, amongst others, Christ College Brecon and St Julian’s Newport. Support for the teams was enthusiastic and the standard of public speaking very high. We now look forward to going through to the All Wales Final.
