 Howell's Sixth Form College
Howell's College offers students an outstanding learning experience
designed to manage the transition between school and university. Combining the academic excellence for which Howell's School is renowned with flexible teaching styles geared to the individual, the college ably prepares its students for higher education and beyond.
Our new co-educational structure meets a real demand from both parents and students
for young men to have the same distinctive opportunities that young women in Howell's sixth form have long enjoyed. Wide-ranging consultation and research has also shown that our girls want a broader experience, of which co-education is one aspect.

INTERVIEW WITH EDWARD DOE

ON FORTHCOMING 'FOOTBALL' TRIP TO AUSTRALIA

1.     Congratulations Ed on being selected to represent the UK in Australia. You have been selected for the GB Bulldogs Australian Rules Football Team. First of all tell us all about this British team.

Well there are guys from all around Britain competing for seats on the plane to Melbourne. Most of them play Rugby and football at a high level and, like me, thought they would try something different for a change.

2.     Where are they based?

We train most weeks in Regent’s Park in London as a majority of the team are from London.

3.     How did you become involved with them in the first place?

I started a year ago just playing for the local Cardiff team then played for Wales against England in the first ever international. It was thanks to a friend who asked me to come along and have a kick as he knew that I would enjoy that kind of thing.

4.     What exactly is 'Australian Rules' football?

It’s a mix between rugby and football. It’s a full contact game so there is a lot of tackling, as well as running, kicking, catching and scoring goals.

5.     What kind of interest is there in this country for this sport?

A year ago there was very little but 12 months later there are over 100 registered players from Newport, Cardiff and Swansea which shows that the interest of the sport in this country is on the rise.

6.     What excites you about this type of football, which is clearly very different to what we, in Wales, are used to?

The amount of kicking, scoring goals and also the contact but if you are a rugby player , it means you keep fit on the off season (as it is played through the summer) and also hugely increases your handling skills which are very important in rugby.

7.     Are we able to watch this sport on television and, in particular, will we be able to see you, Ed, playing?

You can watch it on some of the sports channels like Setanta Sports and Euro Sport. All the games that I will be playing in Australia will be on the AFL Britain website.

8.     This is an 'International Cup' in Melbourne. Who else is playing?

The top teams playing will be: New Zealand, Papa New Guinea, the USA, Canada and South Africa. There are, however,  lots more competing.

9.     How do you think you were selected over and above others and please don't be modest?

As I play a lot of rugby at outside half that means that I am used to kicking therefore I might have had a head start on some people as I was able to kick reasonably accurate from the start.

10. You will be an ambassador not only for Howell's Sixth Form College but also for the whole of Wales. Who else will you be promoting?

Aussie Rules Wales and South Cardiff panthers.

11. How will you encourage other young people to become involved?

There are lots of facebook groups and adverts that people can see and get information from about the sport training and matches but for even younger kids there are planned visits to junior school next season to try and promote the sport in Wales.

12. Obviously a trip like this is going to be expensive. Do you have any funding?

Yes. I wrote a letter to Cardiff County Council and I was lucky enough to have £500 from them to support my trip.

13. Have you ever been to Australia before?

I have never been but I know lots of people who have and they all said it was an amazing place.

14. You must be very excited.

Yes, I can’t wait.

Let's hope, Ed, that anyone reading this will, perhaps, be able to help you go out there and represent us here in Howell's and the whole of Wales.

This is really exciting and fascinating news, Ed. You go with our best wishes and, once again, huge congratulations on the success you have had so far. I'm sure it will open all kinds of doors for you.

ADAM THOMPSON'S RECENT RUGBY ACHIEVEMENTS.

Adam Thompson, Year 13, is a very talented and successful rugby player. He has toured South Africa with the Cardiff School's Rugby Under 15s. Not only has he played Cardiff Blues Under 16s a year early but also played the following year in his own age group.

Adam has also won the Wales Under 16s Cap and played at the famous Millfield Tournament in Somerset. In addition to playing the Cardiff and District Under 18s recently (when he was nominated as Player of the Season) he has also played for the Cardiff Blues Under 18s.

Among Adam's other accomplishments are playing against the Scarlets, the Ospreys and the Dragons, all at the relevant age group level. He has also excelled with the Llanishen Rugby Club in Cardiff, winning the coveted title of 'Player of the Season' for the last two seasons. He was their Vice Captain last season and such was his success that he has been nominated the Club Captain for next season.

Adam is the first and only international player to come from Llanishen RFC and is the only Cardiff Schools First Team player to come from both his previous school, St.John's College, and his current Howell's Sixth Form College.

Adam trains very hard throughout the week and deserves all the successes he will surely achieve in the future. We give him our best wishes.

Finally, read what some of our sixth formers have to say …

“My own school had no sixth form option so I had many colleges to choose from. I looked at many colleges but Howell’s was the one which I liked most. The entire process prior to and during my application stages was first class and superior to all of the other colleges which I viewed. There was a real buzz about the place and the new mixed College was something I was excited about being part of.”
(new male student)

“The College has successfully achieved its goal of creating a co-ed environment and maintaining the high standard of education. The classrooms are filled with a variety of opinions, brought forward by being privileged to have the mixture of boys and girls. This co-ed system has meant that a lot more options are available to the students of this school, varying from charity associations to a football team! If that isn’t great I can not imagine what is!”
(existing female Howell’s student)

“The main reason I chose to leave my school and come to Howell’s Sixth Form College was the chance of an excellent educational opportunity in an environment which offered me the chance to further my extra-curricular activities at the same time. I found the wide-ranging choice of subjects the College offers such as Politics and Critical Thinking and also the already outstanding record of teaching in the other subjects to be very enticing. The College presented by far the best opportunity around.”
(new male student)

“Howell’s is perfect for me, it really is. I have so many more opportunities here and I’m already becoming more self-confident. I made new friends on my second day – something I’d never anticipated – and all the different clubs and societies are really great. The Critical Thinking course is also really interesting and useful. The whole atmosphere of the school is great. I really feel like I belong here.”
(new female student)

“The main reason for choosing Howell’s was the excellent education that it offered which is extremely important in the sixth form because of the significance of the A level examinations. Howell’s has long held a reputation for being at the top in Wales for teaching and the opportunity to learn from such inspirational teachers could not be missed.”
