UK Youth Parliament Member from Norwich High School!
Alice Hyde, a Year 12 pupil
at Norwich High School, has been elected as the
UK Youth Parliament member for Norwich South for 2008-2010. “The
elections were very hard work but great fun. It was a fantastic experience
and I am very excited to have the opportunity to represent young people
in my constituency”, she commented. The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP)
enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world
for the better. Run by young people for young people, it provides opportunities
for 11-18-year-olds to use their voice in creative ways to bring about
social change. Each LEA in England
represents a UKYP constituency. UKYP elections take place each year
in every part of the UK
and any young person aged 11- 18 can stand or vote. In the past two
years over 550,000 young people have voted in UKYP elections. Once elected,
MYPs work with their MPs, councillors, school and youth
councils and peer group members on the issues of greatest concern to
their constituents. Former
Norwich High
School pupil Emily Baxter was a Member of
the Youth Parliament in 2006-2008.

Placement success
Congratulations to Indea Cadman-Rivers (Lower VI /
Year 12) who has been picked out by investment bankers Lehman Brothers for a
summer induction programme at Canary
Wharf. Another
opportunity, exclusive to GDST candidates, has been scooped by Sophie Black.
She is one of only six students selected by HSBC to work as a (well paid)
intern for part of her gap year. This is the third year in which our students
have been selected by Lehman Bros and we hope that these successes will be
continued in future by our students who have an interest and/or background in
economics.

New swimming record
Anne Bochmann (Year 10) has had a busy few weeks,
travelling across the world for the British Swimming End of Year Tour. She
visited Singapore where
she trained alongside 12 other 14-16 year-old girls from the UK. After two
weeks the group moved to Brisbane,
Australia,
where they took part in the Queensland Swimming Championships. This was
Anne’s first taste of International competition representing the UK –
she won two gold medals and three silver in the 14 year-old
category. Her winning time of 4.49.35 in the 400 Individual Medley set a new British record for 14 year-old girls (she
is already the 13 year old record holder for this event). She is now
preparing for the British Championships and Olympic trials (Beijing)
which will be held in Sheffield in April.

Young Musician of the
Year
Congratulations to Eleonora Koulouri-Consta
(Year 9) who came first in the county’s Young Musician of the Year
competition. Eleonora, who has been playing the
violin for four years, is one of the youngest people to ever perform in the
competition which is aimed at under-21s. Her solo recital of pieces by JS
Bach, Stravinsky and Smetana impressed the judges, who commented: “Her
performance was excellent and she certainly has the potential to do very
well.” Eleonora also won ‘most
promising string player’.
