School Letters

From the Nursery, through the Junior Department and on to the Senior Department, we aim to provide a curriculum which is rich in opportunities for personal fulfilment. We uphold the values of hard work and good manners, and the school ethos of mutual co-operation and respect, thus creating a harmonious atmosphere where girls learn from adults and each other.

Learning Support
As a school we are committed to recognising and supporting pupils who have Special Educational or Additional Learning needs enabling each individual to achieve her best and to reach her full potential with access to all aspects of school life. As a fully integrated school it is the shared responsibility of all staff to accommodate pupils with different learning styles, including pupils who are Gifted and Talented. Interestingly many pupils who have Learning Support sessions are also on the Gifted and Talented spectrum.

Our objectives are:
• To help pupils achieve improved self-esteem and confidence as learners.
• To help pupils achieve independence as learners by teaching underpinning study and organisational skills.
• To be involved in arranging exam concessions for internal and external exams.
• To be a resource for staff.
• To liase with staff, parents and external agencies.

Learning support offered may include: in class support, small group sessions working on literacy, study skills and exam preparation plus after school drop in workshops for pupils preparing for external exams.

Learning Support sessions are offered to pupils referred to us by parents, staff or for who have been identified by screening tests on admission. We liase closely with our Junior Department.

Junior Department Curriculum

The curriculum is all the activities that we organise in order to promote learning and personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children. It also includes the 'hidden curriculum', or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We value the way in which all children are unique, and our curriculum promotes respect for the views of each individual child, as well as for people of all cultures.

The aims of our school curriculum are:

  • to enable all children to learn and develop their skills to the best of their ability;
  • to deliver a curriculum at a point that allows all children access to it;
  • to promote a positive attitude towards learning, so that children enjoy coming to school, and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning;
  • to teach children the basic skills of literacy, numeracy, ICT, music, art and P.E.
  • to enable children to be creative and to develop their own thinking;
  • to teach children about their developing world, including how their environment and society have changed over time;
  • to help children understand Britain's cultural heritage;
  • to enable children to be positive citizens in society;
  • to fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum, Foundation subjects and the agreed syllabus for Religious Education;
  • to teach children to have an awareness of their own spiritual development, and to understand right from wrong;
  • to help children understand the importance of truth and fairness, so that they grow up committed to equal opportunities for all;
  • to enable children to have respect for themselves and high self-esteem, and to be able to live and work co-operatively with others.

Enabling Access to Further Mathematics. SCHS is a lead centre in a nationwide distance learning project to support external students studying Further Mathematics. We provide tutorial guidance to complement extensive internet resources. This is provided by a personal visit, on-line tests and web-conferencing.
