"By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn."
In retiring not only from the Headship at Wimbledon High School, but from my chosen profession, I have had cause to reflect on the past 37 years. There have been many changes and challenges along the way and I have loved every moment.
I have been extremely privileged to have led such a vibrant and successful school as WHS: a veritable community of bright students who aspire to achieve in all areas of their young lives; innovative staff, who lead by example, and parents who have always been supportive in so many ways. Special thanks to the WHSA who do such a splendid job fundraising for the school.
When Edith Hastings spoke of the spirit and ethos of Wimbledon High School she was absolutely right and these two hallmarks of the early days are still in existence today. The School has a real buzz and commitment not only to education but also fun. The last year has been every bit as fulfilling as others before it and despite the public and school examinations that took place this term, there is again no shortage of events and activities to report on.
It remains for me to thank everyone, the staff, students, parents and governors for their kind words and deeds as I stride into my retirement.
Wimbledon High School is indeed in great heart, and the girls and staff are worthy successors to the spirit of all those who have gone before. I am sure that under the leadership of my successor, Heather Hanbury, it will go forward to even more ‘unconquered peaks above’.
