Being bold for change at Howell’s on International Women’s Day

The Hub at Howell’s School, Llandaff was a hive of activity on Wednesday 8th March as it celebrated International Women’s Day 2017 with a series of events throughout the day to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.

First on the agenda was a Made in Howell’s Business Breakfast, to which the school welcomed women from the Howell’s community from wide ranging professions. Lawyers, doctors, accountants, dentists and more networked with one another while enjoying coffee and croissants. They also met the school’s Year 13 Young Leaders, sharing their experiences and helping the students to build their networks.

At lunchtime, Melanie Constantinou, founder of mail-order Bara Brith company Baked By Mel, arrived to share her business experiences. After a light lunch, Mel talked about the journey her baked goods (a favourite with HRH The Prince of Wales) make from her kitchen to the Food Hall at Fortnum and Mason. While everyone enjoyed tea and sampled Mel’s bara brith, violinist and aspiring composer Katie J (Year 12) talked about forging a career in a profession dominated by men and the women who inspire her.  She also gave a beautiful performance of Rachmaninov with accompanist Mr Simon Shewring.

The day culminated with a Vintage Tea with the JCC (Junior Competition Choir). The Deputy Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Georgina Phillips introduced the JCC, who treated us to a fantastic performance ahead of the final of the GDST Choir of the Year competition. It was a fitting end to an excellent and empowering day.

Howell’s wishes to thank all the staff, students, parents, alumni, governors and friends who made the day so successful and helped raise £1000 for Breast Cancer Care. A particular thanks must also go to the catering team who worked so hard and provided delicious refreshments throughout the day!
