Women in science inspire Blackheath High School

At Blackheath High on Tuesday 14th March, 150 parents and students were treated to an evening of scientific discovery and motivational speeches from six women who lead in their scientific fields.

The “Women in Science” event, part of our ‘STEM Week,’ brought together speakers from UCL, Imperial College and Cambridge University, with each scientist giving a 15-minute speech on their specialised subject, along with some words of wisdom for the assembled audience as to the benefits of a science career. Impressively, four of the speakers were our alumnae and our teachers were proud to see how their former students had flourished at university and beyond. Once the speeches were finished, everyone adjourned to our Sixth Form Centre, Westcombe House, for a networking reception. We were joined by representatives from the Engineering Department from Brunel University who, along with the guest speakers, answered students’ and parents’ questions about careers in science.

We are always delighted to welcome back former students so if you would like to participate in a careers event, present a Wollstonecraft lecture or just visit the school, please contact Corrie Rafferty: c.rafferty@bla.gdst.net
