The GDST Insights and Framework Report showcases expert knowledge to provide parents and educators with the tools to understand how to enable girls to achieve their full potential in a world still characterised by inequalities and personal prejudices. The insights from the report’s contributors are focused on three core principles for educating girls to realise their ambitions: Classroom, Curriculum and Culture.

GDST INSIGHTS REPORT

Classroom

Our first deep dive in the report examines ‘girls in the classroom.’ Our call to action is for all educators to do everything possible to close the gap in authority and confidence between boys and girls. The report highlights the need to create environments where girls feel empowered to speak up and take intellectual risks. Encouraging girls to step out of their comfort zones and try new things is crucial for building courage.

Curriculum

The second principle explores the importance of delivering a forward-focused curriculum and co-curriculum that removes barriers, breaks stereotypes, and develops essential skills for girls. Girls in single-sex schools are more likely to pursue STEM subjects compared to their peers in co-educational settings. In fact, the Institute of Physics found that the percentage of girls in single-sex schools who take up A-level Physics is higher than that of girls and boys nationally. Meanwhile, alumnae of single-sex-schools are three times more likely to report they intend to pursue a career in engineering than their peers in co-ed schools.

Culture

The final principle emphasises the importance of forming an unwavering girl-focused mission in a school culture that empowers and values girls. The GDST Insights Report highlights the role of internal and external female role models in inspiring girls and helping them envision their potential. Schools should create environments where girls feel they belong and are encouraged to pursue their aspirations without gender-based limitations. It is essential that a school culture empowers girls to develop their voices.
