The Headmistress, Mrs Caroline Petryszak, said: “I congratulate the students on the mature way in which they have handled this unprecedented situation. With examinations cancelled they may have been tempted to put their feet up, but true to their spirit and that of the school, they took the opportunity to engage in Masterclasses led by our own staff and those from across the GDST. They collaborated with others as they focused on preparation for university and undertook real-world training, including courses in Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Fashion Design and Scriptwriting. In addition, they completed MOOCs (massive online open courses) delivered by universities across the world, and many gave their time to supporting their local communities through the COVID crisis. Without doubt, they are fully prepared for independent study and I am incredibly proud of all that they have achieved over the past few months.

“I would also like to thank colleagues for their unstinting support of the students and for their hard work and professionalism throughout the crisis. All have demonstrated their adaptability, resilience and individuality and have learnt to work collaboratively even when apart.”

With examination grades ultimately decided upon by the exam boards’ algorithms this year, and the appeals process yet to be clarified, it is not yet possible to report on all outcomes.

As always, our students are going on to study a dizzying array of courses. The vast majority have already been successful in securing their university places, which range from Maths, Medicine and Dentistry, to Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering; from International Relations and Political Science to Philosophy and Psychology; from Fashion Marketing, Textile Design and Illustration to Music at a London Conservatoire, Architecture at Liverpool University and Global Sustainability Development at Warwick. “The breadth of degree courses and university destinations reflect our students’ huge variety of individual aspirations and tailored pathways”, commented Mrs Petryszak.

“We know how important it is for our students not only to get a place on the course of their dreams but also to be able to flourish and excel when they get there, and I have every confidence that every member of the class of 2020 will do exactly that. They will draw on their recent experiences, the expertise and energy of our exceptional staff and be fuelled by the ongoing support of the GDST network. There really is no limit to what they can achieve, and I congratulate them wholeheartedly on their collaborative and individual successes and wish them well for the future.”
