Author and alumna Jamila Gavin returns to Notting Hill & Ealing High for World Book Day

Notting Hill & Ealing High School were delighted to welcome author Jamila Gavin (NHEHS 1957) back to school for World Book Day. She inspired the girls with an assembly, wonderful writing workshops & a brilliant Q&A session.

Jamila Gavin was born in Mussoorie, India. She moved to England when she was 11 years old; studying at Notting Hill & Ealing High School and then specifically music at Trinity College of Music, London. Jamila went on to work for the BBC, first in radio, then in television, as Production Assistant and Director of Music and Arts programmes.

She published her first book, ‘The Orange Tree and Other Stories’ (later republished as ‘The Magic Orange Tree’) in 1979, and has since written more than 50 short story collections, teenage novels and books for children aged six to sixteen years. In 2000 her book ‘Coram Boy’ set in 18th-century England, won the Whitbread Children’s Book Award, and has been adapted for the stage. It was performed at Notting Hill & Ealing High School as the school production in 2007.
