Biomed Award for Shrewsbury High School

Staff and pupils at Shrewsbury High School are celebrating after winning a national education award for the third year in a row. At the Education Business Awards 2016, the school received three shortlistings in the national EB Education Awards, for ICT Innovation via their Coding And Lego scheme, for Best Community Initiative, in the form of their Biomed programme and for the whole school prize Outstanding Progress – Independent Sector. The school’s Biomed Programme won its category to the delight of all involved, including teachers Darren Payne, Sian Morris and Barry Brown.

Darren Payne, Head of Chemistry, was thrilled with the award and has his eyes firmly set on the next conference later this year,  “Naturally, we are delighted to have received this award as it is recognition of the progress we have made in supporting pupils in many schools across the region in their applications to study Medicine.

The Biomedical Conference is an opportunity for girls and boys in Years 10 and above to receive expert advice from doctors, medical students, admissions tutors and other healthcare professionals. On October 8th, we will host our 3rd annual conference and we will expand the programme to include nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy and dentistry. In addition, the school will provide a series of lectures and are planning a visit to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science at Keele University all of which will be available to pupils from schools in Shropshire.”

Headmaster Michael Getty said the award was a “great testament to the hard work put into the scheme by all staff involved. This means that initiatives run by staff across the school have now secured six shortlistings and three national award wins over the last three years, which is a fantastic achievement and a wonderful way to recognise the hard work that goes in right across the school. A super way to end the year!”

The school’s next Biomed Conference will be held on 8th October 2016. If you wish to find out more about the conference, email the school for further details.
