Brighton & Hove High Juniors celebrate Brighton’s 50th Children’s Parade

On Saturday 7th May, Brighton Girls Juniors took part in the 50th annual Brighton Children’s Parade. The parade marks the start of the infamous Brighton Fringe Festival each year and is a hugely successful community event where over 60 local schools take part and parade through the streets of Brighton, culminating at Marine Parade in front of thousands of spectators. This year the theme was “Brighton Celebrates” and the junior school were allocated the theme of the Theatre Royal Brighton. A lot of time and effort went into creating a structure of the theatre, complete with an inside view of “Jack and the Beanstalk”.

Several weeks were spent practising the samba band music and creating the colourful capes and masks to wear along the parade, including large comedy/tragedy mask props, which prominently danced above the girls on their way along the route. On the day of the event, the sun shone throughout and a brilliant day was had by all. Parade structures are normally destroyed at the end of the event but the school was very pleased that the Theatre Royal has temporarily rehomed its magnificent structure in the foyer of the theatre for all to see for weeks to come, including throughout the Brighton Fringe Festival.
