Brilliance and Grit from our wonderful Year 11 girls

A well-deserved morning of celebration at Shrewsbury High School as year 11 students collected their GCSE results to warm congratulations from their families, teachers, and school friends. As a group, the girls have achieved outstanding results, with 60% of grades at grades 9-7, significantly above the national average of 26% in England and 23% in the West Midlands.

Headteacher Jo Sharrock expressed her pride at the maturity the girls demonstrated in navigating the disruption of the last two years of Covid:

“I could not be happier for this wonderful year group of young women. Today marks a great achievement in the face of considerable adversity. Blending brilliance and grit, these girls have worked incredibly hard and shown enormous character as they adapted to an ever-changing landscape. Whatever their starting point, they have exceeded their own expectations and they thoroughly deserve the grades they receive today. A huge thank you as well to the dedicated teachers and staff at Shrewsbury High who have supported our students both academically and pastorally, these results are testament to the close-knit relationships we build with our students and their families”

Individually there have been some outstanding results and we must congratulate Pippa Simcock on a sweep of 9 grade 9s.

Approximately only 0.2% of GCSE students nationally achieve this and we are extremely proud that Pippa is one of this very prestigious group.  What has also been very exciting is the breadth of success across so many faculties – superb results for our Creative Subjects of Art (86% 9-7), Drama (93% 9 -7) and Music (83% 9-7).  We believe passionately in celebrating and nurturing the arts at SHS and we are delighted that these subjects achieve such strong results at both GCSE and A level.  Likewise for our Languages Faculty we continue to buck the national trend with excellent results in French, German, Spanish and Latin.  Computer Science is a growing subject at Shrewsbury High and achieved outstanding results, as did Statistics with 100% 9-7 and of course there was strong performances in STEM, English and the Humanities.

So, with achievement across the board, we can now look ahead to welcoming the girls back to school in September to begin their A level studies in our Sixth Form.  With 80% of our recent year 13 leavers moving on to their first choice university, our new Sixth Formers know that whatever their ambitions for the future, the next two years at Shrewsbury High will set them up to head out into the world with confidence and ambition.  We couldn’t be prouder of them all!
