GDST Young Choir of the Year 2017

Earlier this week (15th March 2017), over 250 girls from six GDST schools took part in the live final of the GDST Young Choir of the Year competition at the prestigious Cadogan Hall in London.

Twenty four GDST schools entered the competition before the judges selected the final six junior choirs to go forward into the final. The competing schools were Kensington Prep School, Notting Hill and Ealing Junior School, Blackheath High Junior School, Bromley High Junior School, Oxford High Junior School and Howell’s School, Llandaff

Before the final began, each choir had an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the beautiful but imposing surroundings of Cadogan Hall, by rehearsing on stage. After a short lunch break, it was time to get the live final underway. Clearly unfazed by the packed auditorium, each choir beautifully delivered two songs, with numbers taken from Broadway musicals to traditional Welsh songs.

Their perfomances were scrutinised by a stellar panel of judges: Suzi Digby OBE, an internationally renowned choral conductor, choir master and music educator; Martha Burke, an Ipswich High alumna and undergraduate with an already impressive CV of perfomances in musical theatre; and composer/conductor Susannah Self, an alumna of South Hampstead High School.

While the judges grappled with the difficult task of choosing the winners, all six choirs delivered a stunning ensemble performance of Sing by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Gary Barlow.

After the deliberations were over, Blackheath High Junior School choir were crowned winners of the competition.

We’d like to extend our congratulations to the winning choir and all of the schools which took part in the competition. We would also like to thank all of the school and Trust Office staff who made the event such a success.
