Howell’s host spectacular Spring Concert

With the Great Hall of Howell’s School, Llandaff still enshrouded in scaffolding, the Music Department had to think outside the box when it came to this year’s Spring Concert. Never one to shrink from a challenge, Mrs Phillips decided to think big, and on Saturday 1 April, music and song filled every inch of Llandaff Cathedral for a heart-stopping evening of stunning performances. With an orchestra and choir that were both augmented by alumni, staff, parents and friends, it was a wonderful example of the whole school community coming together.

The evening began with an awe-inspiring rendition of Handel’s Zadok the Priest, with the organ shaking the cathedral to its very foundations, followed by a mixed programme of musical items from the Junior Competition Choir, Youth Choir, Senior Choir, College Choir and Senior Orchestra. After the interval, a breathtaking performance of Mozart’s beautiful Requiem gave the students the opportunity to perform in a large scale choral works. Howell’s is extremely fortunate to have close links with the Cathedral and is very grateful to the Dean and Chapter for allowing the Spring Concert to be held in such magnificent surroundings.

It was the final concert for the Year 13 students, who were about to embark on their A-level exams, and we wish them every success for the future and thank them warmly for their unstinting support and for sharing their musical talents with us.
