Sparking curiosity in the next generation of female scientists

To mark British Science Week (7th – 16th March 2025), 104 pupils from 20 schools gathered at the Royal Institution for the Junior Science Conference. This annual GDST event aims to provide an exciting introduction to the world of STEM, designed to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of female scientists – and 2025’s science-fuelled day was no different.

A day of scientific activities and experiments

Throughout the day, pupils took part in a variety of interactive science experiments, from extracting their own DNA in the L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre, to designing and testing vehicles in the Great Crash Test Challenge. They also had the unique opportunity to hear from inspiring female PhD students, who shared their cutting-edge research on plastic pollution and T cell research as well as their insights into life as a scientist.

“It was a fantastic privilege to spend the day taking over such a historic home of science, and to be steeped in scientific innovation at every corner. As the girls were leaving, many were heard to say “that was the best trip I have ever been on” which just about sums it up! Huge thanks to the Royal Institution staff for putting together such a special day for us.” – Alex Farrer, Head of Junior Science at Wimbledon High School.

The day ended with a grand finale – a show titled ‘Change & Adapt: A Messy Science Show’ in the Faraday Lecture Theatre. This dynamic performance, which was also livestreamed to classrooms across GDST schools and partnership schools, brought science to life with thrilling demonstrations and unexpected surprises.

Challenging stereotypes at the GDST

At the GDST, we encourage our students to immerse themselves in the subjects that interest them the most, free from gender-stereotyping. Our schools belong to a family of 26 schools, providing a network where students can make connections and where we can share expertise and champion best practice. Our Junior Science Conference is just one of a series of GDST-wide events in which we connect great minds from across the GDST family.
