Spotlight on Sonali Naik, Birkenhead High School Academy

As we count down to the GDST Alumna of the Year Award 2018, we’re shining the spotlight on each of our trailblazing finalists. Here, we find out more about Sonali Naik, alumna of Birkenhead High School Academy.

Sonali Naik was named as The Times’ Lawyer of the Week in January of this year for her recent successful case in the Supreme Court, and appointed a QC in February (one of only 32 women of the 119 appointees this year).

She is also a board member of Liberty, Freedom from Torture, and sits on the Advisory Council of JUSTICE. She is also a patron of Clean Break Theatre Company.

She was called to the Bar in 1991 and initially worked in the NGO sector. She has been in practice at Garden Court Chambers ever since, specialising in the fields of public law and immigration, gaining a strong reputation in all aspects of immigration, asylum and nationality law.

Sonali was nominated for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in 2016 in recognition of her asylum and human rights protection work.

With fewer than 15% of practising QCs being women, and only 7.1% from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, Sonali’s impact and success in this specialist area is outstanding.
