Northampton High School didn’t let Covid 19 ruin festivities for European Day of Languages. It is traditionally a very important day in the school calendar and the Languages faculty was determined that the school would still mark this European-wide celebration of language learning.

Events moved online with a whole week of activities that culminated in a virtual school assembly, where some of the school’s many talented linguists – from junior school to A Level students – displayed their skills and passion for languages.

While many girls missed the social aspect of the usual events, tutor groups enjoyed quizzes on the theme of language learning, including Latin and Greek derivations. Year 8 girls considered sexism in language, Year 6 created Matisse-style paintings which were showcased at the school assembly and Year 5 designed posters to mark the occasion. The highlight of the week was a virtual Bake Off with photos submitted by the girls of their creations. The winning creation was a cake baked by Laura in Year 9 which featured a clock face with numbers in different languages.
