Sutton High students through to prestigious Big Bang Fair final

After participating in the recent Big Bang Fair heats in East London, two teams of students from Sutton High School have been selected to go through to the finals of the national event at the Birmingham NEC in March 2018.

The Year 7 and 8 team presented their robotic hydraulic arm, made during Kaleidoscope lessons. The judges were impressed with the team’s work and brilliant explanation of the concept. The judges gave them top tips for improving their model for the Big Bang Fair finals.

The Year 12 Toast-E robot team were dejected that their robot was not carrying out all the expected moves on the day of the competition. However their disappointment quickly turned to joy as the judges appreciated the difficulty of what they were trying to carry out – from 3D printing, to assembly, to coding the robot. They were particularly impressed with how the girls hacked the code when they realised that it was not working as planned in order to make simpler moves.

Dr Bartalini, the teams’ teacher, said: “I’m extremely proud of my pupils’ achievements in getting to the final of such a prestigious event.

“The independence with which they have approached the project is very important and they have bravely faced several setbacks. The passion they have shown in developing their project has been so inspiring to watch.

“The fact that they are groups of girls is also fantastic. We need more of them in the STEM world!”

Headmistress of Sutton High School, Mrs Katharine Crouch, said: “We are thrilled and delighted that two teams representing Sutton High have made it to the finals of the Big Bang Fair – an event that provides brilliant STEM inspiration for young people everywhere.”

Director of Communications of Engineering UK, Beth Elgood, said: “The team at Sutton High School really impressed the judges with their Toast-E project and we are excited to see how they do at the finals. ”

The Big Bang Fair will celebrate its tenth year at the NEC in Birmingham from March 14 to March 17 2018.
