The benefits of my single-sex education

A Portsmouth High School GDST student is so passionate about the value of girls’ education that she wrote to the editor of The Telegraph. Her published letter highlights the benefits of her girls-only education and the brilliant opportunities her school has provided. We are so proud of our fearless GDST students who act and speak with conviction and go on to become the leaders and changemakers of the future.

SIR – As the head girl of a single-sex school (Letters, February 26), I have experienced the benefits of learning in an environment where we can focus on our studies without distractions.

Free from the pressures of a mixed classroom, I have been able to develop strong study habits, manage my time and push myself. In my school, there is no sense that certain subjects are “for boys” or “for girls”; we are simply encouraged to follow our interests.

Beyond academic work, my school fosters an environment where confidence thrives. Being in a classroom of only girls has meant that I have never hesitated to speak up or take on leadership roles. I have been able to become the best version of myself by following my passions.

The same goes for sports and extracurricular activities. Every girl feels comfortable trying new things, whether stepping on to the netball court for the first time or joining the debating team. We grow into resilient, independent young women.

Single-sex education has given me the space to become the confident, empowered individual I am today, and I would not trade that for anything.
