Top grades for multi-talented girls

Nottingham Girls’ High School is today celebrating wonderful GCSE results for a super, multi-talented Year 11 cohort.  The group have shown fantastic academic ability as well as the great spirit of confidence, positivity and energy that NGHS girls are renowned for.

With an impressive 22% overall at the elusive top grade 9, and boasting a remarkable 44% of grades at 9 – 8 and 85% at 9 – 6, the girls have performed brilliantly across their broad range of academic subjects. Head, Julie Keller, is thrilled, saying: “Our girls have done extremely well, rising to the challenge of changing GCSEs, enjoying their subjects and achieving outstanding results. I’m incredibly proud of their achievements, and look forward to working with them as they continue to succeed through the Sixth Form and beyond.”

Twelve girls achieved all 9 – 8 grades in their subjects, which is equivalent to them achieving A*s under the old system. Nine of these girls were awarded at least seven of the highest grade 9s, and particular mention should go to Iqra Shiekh who obtained a grade 9 in all 10 of her subjects on a day that national news claimed only a few hundred pupils across the country would sweep the board with grade 9 – outstanding!

There have been interesting debates in the news recently suggesting that girls neither take nor enjoy science subjects, resulting in low numbers of women in science professions. This makes the school’s science results particularly exciting as it is celebrating huge successes in the top grade 9 this year with Chemistry at 33%, Biology at 25% and Physics at 31%.

More impressive still is that 24 girls were awarded grade 9 in all three science subjects.

Julie commented again, saying: “These extraordinary results demonstrate that when you make Science lessons relevant and fun, with excellent, dedicated teachers, girls achieve great things in the field. My staff have done me proud and these girls have exciting opportunities for shaping the world in the future.”

Top marks are evident across the board, with an unusually broad range of subjects available for girls to study. As well as Humanities, Languages, Maths and Science, girls at NGHS enjoy Economics, Physical Education and the Arts.

The school sporting stars achieved great results in all their subjects, including PE, as well as great success in extracurricular activities. Among these is canoeist, Charlotte Carey, who has represented Team GB; Martha Lubczynskyj, an Olympic hopeful climber, and an extremely talented Netball team who have just returned from their Netball tour in Antigua, including Toto Oyetan, Paris Gill, Serena Dowie and Phoebe Hargreaves who have celebrated an impressive sweep of grade 8 and 9s between them.

Similarly, friends Helena Constantinou, Arianne Dunn, Erin Kingsley, Anna Watson and Olivia Ydlibi shared an epic adventure on the World Challenge trip to Costa Rica over the summer, and today share great news about their results.

Stars of Music and Drama have also done brilliantly. Seldom off the stage or out of the orchestra pit, elite musician Elizabeth Bratton achieved 8 grade 9s, and former West End star, Tilly Belton scooped five of the highest grades too, proving that academic success and pursuit of personal goals can and do go hand in hand.
