We are family

A new Facebook group – GDST HELPS – is proving that GDST alumnae don’t just stick together but pull together, too

A Facebook page where GDST Alumnae can offer help and support to those who need it is on its way to 1,000 members. GDST Helps was set up by the GDST’s alumnae team when they realised there was a real appetite for people to connect with, and help each other, during the Coronavirus crisis.

The Facebook group has quickly garnered members and support from across the GDST family. Many GDST medical alumnae are connecting via the group, looking to support each other and asking for help with critical issues such as PPE donations and distribution. Many medics are exchanging information – including a Portsmouth High alumna who trained in Tropical Disease Biology under Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, and another alumna who is involved in the battle to find a Covid-19 test.

But it’s not all medics, there are many alumnae offering their experience and support and help with ideas for home-schooling; even offering online tutoring for struggling parents. And many alumnae are just connecting and sharing stories in this trying time, including an alumna from Streatham & Clapham who went on to become a professional stunt double in Hollywood and won a SAG award for her work on Wonder Woman.

There are also many alumnae offering practical and emotional support to the GDST family. Trained psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors are offering online help for people affected by the lockdown and crisis, while others are offering support ranging from wellbeing and yoga to professional HR advice, connecting on overseas charity work, creating Covid-19 film projects, and providing a host of university and careers advice.
