This Scholarship was established as a tribute to Lady Johnston, a distinguished lawyer, one of the first women to achieve first class honours in jurisprudence at Oxford University and later Parliamentary Counsel. Betty Johnston gave outstanding service to the GDST, not least through her membership of the Council for 35 years, serving as its Chairman from 1975 – 1991 and President at the time of her death in 1994.
The terms of the Scholarship reflect her commitment to ensuring that the Trust’s (and other independent schools) remain accessible to students from a range of circumstances, and also her encouragement for young people entering the legal profession.
Previously the winning student has been awarded up to £2500 over two years. The precise amount and duration is to be announced on an annual basis. The award winner is also offered the opportunity to complete a week’s work experience with the Legal department at the GDST Trust Office in London.
