Caroline Mayr-Harting taught Classics at Oxford High School for almost 30 years from 1977 to 2004. She was a much-loved teacher, who not only inspired many students to study Classics, but was also a brilliant form tutor and led many memorable school trips.
When Caroline died from cancer in November 2020, her family were deeply touched by the wonderful letters they received from her former pupils, colleagues, and friends, which spoke of her incredible legacy. After Caroline passed away an idea began to take shape – to create a travel fund in her name to enable students to participate in an overseas school trip who would not otherwise be able to do so. By creating a £25,000 endowed pot, £500 will be available every academic year in perpetuity, to enable girls to access the same opportunities as their peers. The fund will be open to all girls in the school, recognizing that some families paying full fees might be as stretched in paying for extra-curricular activities as those who are receiving bursary support.
Please would you join us in the goal of raising £25,000 by 14 June 2021 which would have been Caroline’s 77th birthday? No gift is too small because everyone is in different circumstances; it is the shared goal and aspiration that counts. If we exceed the target the funds will make the opportunities for support greater.
Mrs Mayr-Harting loved travelling and saw it as life-enhancing. Growing up in Stockton-on-Tees, her own first experience of going abroad was aged 12 on a school trip to Lourdes in France. She knew the importance of helping young people broaden their horizons and discover themselves. One former pupil, now a distinguished Classics Professor, still remembers the advice Mrs Mayr-Harting gave her aged fourteen, “In life, you really only need to be good at being yourself. That’s all.”
Please help us create The Caroline Mayr-Harting Travel Fund in celebration of her life and thanksgiving for her legacy.
By supporting The Caroline Mayr-Harting Travel Fund, you will be ensuring that all girls at Oxford High School are able to enjoy the same travel opportunities as their peers. Every gift of any size will make a real difference.

The school, GDST and Caroline’s family are incredibly grateful in advance for the support.
“Fresh, direct, clear-sighted, and alert; liberal, tolerant; delighting in quirkiness of character; such a good narrator…Teenagers are averse to phonies and to humbug; they respect a teacher with a kind keen mind, who makes things come alive because they are alive for her. It shapes them. They remember gladly.” – A tribute
