Speaking out for Bromley High

From Reception to Upper Sixth, the curriculum at Bromley High School encourages girls to be confident, articulate speakers and debaters.

We are fortunate that the girls have had the opportunity to hear such inspirational speakers this year,” said Headmistress, Angela Drew, “Natural communicators like Historians Michael Wood and Lucy Worsley, Classicist Dr Rosie Wyles, Neuroscientist Sir Colin Blakemore and Humanitarian Terry Waite.”

And Bromley High debaters and public speakers have been inspired this term. The Year 11 team, speaking on the topic ‘Will tomorrow be better than today?’ won through to the fourth round of the ESU Public Speaking Competition qualifying for the London Regional Finals.

Priyanka Patel (Year 11) and Raveena Rao (Upper Sixth) were runners up to Dulwich College in the London Regional Finals of the ESU Debating Mace and are reserves for the National Finals of this prestigious competition.  Finally, our Year 9 and Year 10 debaters competed at UCL in the ICYD Competition reaching the Final against Tiffin Girls and two teams from Brighton College. Placed second of 38 teams, Chrisa Prachalias (Year 10) and Nilou Davis (Year 9) went on to represent Bromley High at the Cambridge Union Finals. Bromley High was also represented at the Finals of the Oxford Union Schools’ Debating Competition.

In March Bromley High collaborated with Bickley Park Prep School for boys in a whole school public speaking competition which culminated in a Final at St Bride’s, Fleet Street,  judged by celebrated journalist John McCarthy and Emmy award winning BBC producer Lisa Osbourne.
