Over 700 pupils compete in GDST inaugural Regional Festival of Sport

On 1st February 2024, students were invited from across the GDST’s family of schools to participate in the first ever GDST Regional Festival of Sport.

From our elite sportswomen to pupils experiencing competitive matches for the first time, junior and senior GDST students played exhilarating tournaments simultaneously at three regional rallies. Thank you to our host schools Northampton High School, Bromley High School and Oxford High School. Around 250 students at each venue competed in hockey, dance, indoor cricket, water polo and netball. All teams enjoyed healthy competition with a focus on the non-elite teams having bespoke opportunities to play one another.

Hear from our GDST girls and sportswomen

Year 6 hockey player, Felicity at Howell’s School, commented at the outset:

“I’m excited to score lots of goals in hockey and hopefully win! I’m also excited to have a trip outside of Howell’s and visit another school.”

Year 7 netballer, Jessie at Shrewsbury High School, commented at the end of the day:

“I had an amazing day at the GDST Regional Festival. We used lots of teamwork and motivation and we had so much fun meeting and competing against netballers from other GDST schools. Thank you for having us Northampton!”

Encouraging girls in sport at GDST schools

We nurture and encourage our students to participate in a wide variety of sports clubs and offer over 300 across our 23 schools and two academies. We also run a number of Trust-wide events throughout the year, of which February’s Regional Festival of Sport is one. Follow #GDSTsport to keep up to date with our athletes.
