Wimbledon High celebrates its 139th Birthday

139 years ago, a little school on Wimbledon Hill began. Few people expected it to thrive, but thrive it did, and this year we celebrated Wimbledon High School’s birthday with two fabulous alumnae events.

We were delighted to welcome back four alumnae for a panel session organised by our tremendous Student Leadership Team. Tamara Kohler (WHS 2010), who is studying for a PhD in Quantum Information Theory; Gail Cobley (WHS 1988) a Chartered Accountant and Director at leading London group, Blick Rothenberg and current parent; Martha Seignior (WHS 2011) a Bristol Old Vic Theatre School graduate who has just finished touring with the children’s theatre show, The Pirate Cruncher and Charlotte Butler (WHS 1995) Founder and Managing Director of workplace diversity company, Altogether Different.

Students were able to hear stories and ask questions on everything from careers advice to how WHS equipped them for the outside world, to playground antics and favourite (or least favourite) subjects. See more from this event on our Facebook page here.

This was followed by our annual Alumnae Birthday Reunion, where more than 70 alumnae returned to their former school on the hill for an afternoon of reconnecting, reminiscing and celebrating.

Mrs Lunnon and our Head Girl welcomed our alumnae back to the Senior Hall, followed by a hearty rendition of the school song and a tour of the school. We also welcomed back a number of former staff including Mrs Thornton Smith, who taught at WHS for over 30 years and for the first time two old boys who were at the school in the last 1940’s. Read the full story on the schools website here.

The event formally marked the beginning of the schools 140th Birthday Celebrations, which we hope will cultivate many more alumnae relationships and will culminate with our 140th Birthday Reunion in November 2020.
