World Environment Day at the GDST
World Environment Day is the United Nations Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. To mark the day, we take a look at some of the green initiatives in our GDST schools.
Girls from Sutton High have created an art installation at their school, using single-use plastics. The artwork shows two whales and was designed to highlight the importance of protecting the oceans from waste.

Girls from Sydenham High Prep School recently appeared on Blue Peter to collect their green Blue Peter badge. The girls have filmed a YouTube performance of their song Save the World.
Sheffield High School have been awarded the Green Flag Award for the sixth time, in recognition of their commitment to sustainability and the environment. The Green Flag was presented by Eco-Schools, and is an internationally recognised award for excellence in environmental action and learning. They received the award for projects that included upcycling, battery and plastic recycling, eco-lighting and a campaign to stop parents and neighbours leaving their engines running outside the school.
Croydon High’s mission to be plastic-free
At Croydon High, a team of eco-warriors are on a mission to make the school completely plastic-free. Recently, they introduced recycling points for crisp packets, pens and plastic bottle lids. Aleena, one of the girls at the school, has written to Prince Charles to tell him all about the mission, and even received a reply from Clarence House. The school also has an Environment Club, set up by two Sixth Formers, Vanessa and Milla. The club meets every week to talk about how to change habits to be more sustainable and making the school more eco-friendly.
