Spotlight on Afua Hirsch, Wimbledon High School

As we count down to the GDST Alumna of the Year Award 2018, we’re shining the spotlight on each of our trailblazing finalists. Here, we find out more about Afua Hirsch, alumna of Wimbledon High School. 

Afua Hirsch is a writer, broadcaster, barrister and author of Sunday Times best-selling book, Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging.

She has worked in international development, law and journalism. She began working as a lawyer in criminal defence, before becoming firstly the legal correspondent for The Guardian, and then the paper’s West Africa reporter, based in Accra, Ghana.

More recently, she has worked as social affairs editor, and news anchor for Sky News, and regularly presents current affairs debate programmes and documentaries on CNN, the BBC and Channel 4, as well as now being a renowned author.

An inspirational role model, paving the way for other young black women in particular to strive to be all they can be, Afua has acted as a mentor to countless young people and continues to influence people every day.

She is consistently fearless in holding up a mirror to society, and in highlighting the issues that people often struggle to talk about, or prefer to sweep under the carpet.
